I have always heard that the best season for quilting is in the winter. That’s when the weather forces us inside and it feels cozy to settle down at the sewing machine or to do hand quilting or appliqué while cuddled up underneath a project.
But with all the dreariness, dampness, and ice storms of this past winter, I’m beginning to believe that the prime time for quilting is yet to come—when all the newness of spring inspires us to fresh color, new growth, and awakening beauty. Isn’t it a joy to look at all the new quilt books and magazines while sitting in the spring sunshine? Isn’t it fun to do handwork while traveling on car trips? The good weather provides the perfect setting for day trips and explorations into quilt shops. When it’s too hot to garden, or when the evening darkens and it’s time to come inside, what better way to spend a summer night than stitching away?
Sewing provides that special, personal touch that makes gifts for the summer wedding extraordinary and something the newlyweds will truly remember. (How about a new tablecloth, a shower curtain for their new apartment, or a set of bath towels bordered with a beautiful batik?) Quilts for new graduates are meaningful gestures of love and support as they begin new adventures. (Check out our T-Shirt quilt class!)
